Flame Marine Ltd
Company
Flame Marine is an independent provider of engine diagnostic services. We tell shipowners, ship managers and engine designers what is happening inside slow-speed two-stroke engines without a physical inspection.
Flame Marine has been an independent provider of engine performance and oil analysis services since 1998. Its designs and innovations have helped shape the thinking on scavenge drain analysis and its role, through papers published by CIMAC, both independently and jointly with an engine designer, MAN B&W.
Flame Diagnostic was developed at sea, by engineers running long-stroke crosshead engines, and has been refined against the data from every engine sampled since. The interpretation rests on a quantitative model of the engine built from that record.
Most scavenge drain oil analysis is offered by lubricant suppliers as part of their service; Flame Marine supplies no lubricant and sells no fuel, so its advice on feed rate and BN has no commercial interest in the quantity or grade of oil consumed. We have offices in Europe and Australasia.
Standing
- Independent of every lubricant and fuel supplier, and trusted by ship managers and engine designers.
- First to understand and use dilution and contamination correction in drain oil sampling, with Flame ADT. Dilution.
- An engine designer uses Flame Marine's analysis in its own research and development testing.
- Other service providers deliver condition monitoring built on Flame Diagnostic under their own names.
- The method was presented at MARTECH 2000, the CIMAC World Congresses of 2001 and 2004, and the Motorship Marine Propulsion Conference 2003. The papers are on the resources page.
- Flame Marine designed and wrote the software and reporting system behind an engine designer's on-board diagnostic tool for main engine condition monitoring, presented jointly at the CIMAC World Congress 2016 in Helsinki.
- Samples are analysed in a laboratory accredited to ISO/IEC 17025, as the engine designers' guidance recommends.
1971 to today
History
Cylinder drain analysis has been used by lubricant manufacturers since the 1960s to field-test new cylinder oils, typically on a pair of cylinders over about six months. Flame took the method much further.
- 1971
- Flame is established as a shipping company.
- 1974
- Flame begins investigating combustion and lubrication conditions in marine diesel engines.
- 1975
- First investigation using cylinder drain analysis, on a Sulzer 5RND68 two-stroke crosshead engine. The results are interesting, but have little practical application until cylinder oil feed rates rise on the new long-stroke engines.
- Mid-1990s
- Investigating combustion on long-stroke engines, Flame returns to drain analysis and runs it for 7,000 hours and more instead of the usual 3,000-hour field test. Many engines prove to be over-lubricated, with the excess oil burned and in some cases causing heavy piston deposits and ring seizure.
- 1998
- Sampling is extended to every cylinder. Regular sampling and analysis open the way to monitoring the condition of long-stroke crosshead engines continuously, the basis of Flame Diagnostic.
- 2000 to 2004
- The method is presented at MARTECH 2000 in Singapore, the CIMAC World Congresses of 2001 in Hamburg and 2004 in Kyoto, the Kyoto paper written jointly with MAN B&W, and the Motorship Marine Propulsion Conference 2003.
- 2016
- An on-board diagnostic tool for main engine condition monitoring, with the software and reporting system designed and written by Flame Marine, is presented jointly with an engine designer at the CIMAC World Congress in Helsinki.
- Today
- The major engine designers specify regular laboratory drain oil analysis. Flame SDA and Flame Diagnostic turn those samples into findings and recommendations for each unit.
